Phil Christensen presents real world examples of Maxsurf software being used for naval architectural design, from hull curvature analysis and plate forming, to hull optimization, to stability analysis and high speed vessel design.

In this lesson we will create animations which will export to media files such as AVI for presentations. Our instructor starts by opening a sample file and introducing students to Actor Targets and Keyframes. The fundamentals of key frame animation are reviewed and demonstrated by creating a new simple animation.

In this lesson, we open a working design model to explore the rendering styles. Our instructor walks you through how to navigate and modify the rendering view, and the benefits of changing to various display styles (such as filled hidden line, illustration, monochrome, smooth, thematic, transparent, and wireframe). We wrap up this lesson with creating a rending via the Luxology engine built into MicroStation.

Phil Christensen discusses how Maxsurf was utilized in a university course on Offshore Engineering. One week each was devoted to: vessel modeling, intact stability, damage stability and motions prediction. Using Maxsurf, students were tasked to adapt a model of a heavy lift transport vessel, run an analysis on the model, and determine float on conditions for a platform.

An explanation and demonstration of the Maxsurf Structure module, which allows naval architects to define the primary structure of a vessel, placing shell stiffeners and plates in the model via a simple interface and control points. The Multiframe module is also shown, for general purpose stress analysis of 3D beam and plate models, enabling either static or dynamic analysis when loads are applied. We finish by animating our structure to see how it deforms, viewing the deflection and change in stress under loads.

In this lesson our instructor will introduce schedule animations which will assist in creating 4D animations for project planning. After a quick review of navigating within a model, we start creating a scheduling animation. Using the Animation Producer we create a script, add tasks and attach objects in the model to those tasks on a timeline—thus creating a scheduled animation. This quick example introduces scheduling animations through a simple task, which can easily be expanded to show the complete building schedule animation in greater detail.

The Maxsurf Motions module allows naval architects to predict the motions of a vessel, using a strip theory method validated against tank testing and full scale trials. We input the model, headings and speeds, sea states, and identify remote locations to review the motions. The Motions module then outputs predictions for motion sickness index, deck wetness, slamming, propeller emergence, and catamaran roll. We then animate our vessel in an irregular sea state.
